What is the ECL exam?
ECL is an internationally recognised language exam of the European Consortium for the Certificate of Attainment in Modern Languages, taken at levels A2, B1, B2 and C1. The Slovak certificate serves as proof of language proficiency — for example when applying for residence, employment or a work permit, for studies or in academia. It is valid for life.
What does the exam consist of?
The exam tests four skills: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, writing and speaking. There is no separate grammar test — grammar is assessed within the writing and speaking parts.
How is the ECL exam scored and what do you need to pass?
Each of the four parts is worth a maximum of 25 points, 100 in total. You pass if you score at least 40% in every individual part and at least 60% on average overall. If one part goes badly, you can retake it separately — you don't have to sit the whole exam again.
Which levels do you prepare for?
Our 3-month hybrid courses prepare you for levels B1 and B2, which are in the highest demand. Individual preparation for other levels can be arranged by agreement.
Is an ECL certificate enough for Slovak citizenship?
No. For a citizenship application, Slovak is assessed by a commission at the regional district office (okresný úrad v sídle kraja) or a Slovak embassy: an interview, reading a newspaper article aloud and writing up its content. Only a Slovak maturita, the state language exam or a state exam from a Slovak-taught degree exempts you, and only if taken within the past 10 years. ECL applies to residence, employment and studies.
